# Buy workplace communications data for AI training

URL: https://sellmydatatoai.net/buy-ai-training-data/workplace-communications-data

Workplace communications data is licensed email, chat and meeting text from real companies, used to train and test AI agents on how work gets done. Public prices are few: MIT Technology Review reported about $15,000 for one closed startup's workspace data, while Google won Spirit Airlines' archive of 100 million emails and 500 million Teams messages with a $10 million bid.

## Key takeaways

- AI teams use workplace communications data for (1) training agents on multi-step business workflows, (2) fine-tuning assistants for email and chat drafting and (3) reinforcement learning environments built from real work.
- Usually priced per company archive, as a flat license fee.
- Common delivery formats: MBOX or EML email exports, Slack or Teams JSON exports and JSONL threads with message metadata.
- Check before you license workplace communications data: (1) US: employee messages protected under NLRA Section 7, (2) US: CCPA coverage of California employees' personal information and (3) US: privacy notice in force when the messages were sent.
- Every seller we shortlist passes 8 vetting checks before you see a sample.

## Buyer's spec

## What is workplace communications data?

Workplace communications data is the written record of how a company runs: email, Slack and Teams channels, meeting notes and the documents linked from them. AI buyers value it because it shows requests, decisions, handoffs and disagreements in context.

MIT Technology Review reported in October 2026 that Surge AI looks for archives covering situations from "disagreements to tricky judgment calls", and that it uses purchased data to build reinforcement learning gyms where AI agents practice real tasks.

## What do AI teams use workplace communications for?

AI teams use workplace communications mainly to train and evaluate agents that work inside business tools. A thread that runs from request to approval to delivery gives a model a worked example of a multi-step task with a known outcome.

- Agent training: turning real request and reply chains into [agent trajectories](https://sellmydatatoai.net/glossary/agent-trajectory) and tasks
- Assistant fine-tuning: drafting, summarizing and triaging messages in a company's own register
- Evaluation: testing whether a model escalates, declines or asks for clarification at the right moment
- Environment building: seeding simulated inboxes and channels for an [RL environment](https://sellmydatatoai.net/glossary/rl-environment)

## How much does workplace communications data cost?

Workplace communications data has no list price, and most deals are private. The public figures that exist show a wide spread, driven by archive size and by how much context survives de-identification.

| Reported deal | What was licensed | Reported value | Source |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Closed crypto startup, 2026 | Workspace data in Google, Notion, Figma and Slack | About $15,000, pending at the time of reporting | MIT Technology Review, October 2026 |
| Spirit Airlines, August 2026 | 100 million emails, 500 million Teams messages and 176,000 employee records | $10 million winning bid by Google | MIT Technology Review, October 2026 |
| Closed startups generally | Code and workspace data | Typically $10,000 to $100,000 per company | Fortune, September 2026, citing SimpleClosure |

micro1 lists internal communications among the operational records it licenses, with published company payouts starting at $100,000 to $500,000 for a qualified enterprise partnership. Those are payouts to data owners rather than prices to buyers, but they set what sellers expect. ## What rights issues come with workplace communications?

Workplace communications carry more third-party rights than most data types. Daniel Goldberg of Frankfurt Kurnit Klein and Selz notes that email and chat often hold other companies' confidential information covered by NDAs and commercial agreements, which can limit what a seller is free to license.

Employee messages raise a second issue in the US. Goldberg points out that messages about pay, scheduling and working conditions may be protected concerted activity under Section 7 of the National Labor Relations Act, whether or not staff are unionized.

State privacy law applies to staff too. The California Privacy Protection Agency says the CCPA covers California residents who are employees or job applicants, and that the exemptions for employment-related personal information expired on December 31, 2022.

If you hold UK or EU data, the messages are personal data, so the seller needs a lawful basis under UK GDPR or EU GDPR, or must anonymize them.

- Privacy notices: the seller must follow the notice in force when the messages were written
- HR records: suppliers interviewed by MIT Technology Review leave them out
- Client content: privileged or confidential client material removed, not just masked
- Withdrawal: Goldberg warns that data used to train a model cannot practically be pulled back out

## What should you check before buying workplace communications data?

Before buying workplace communications data, check that the seller's vetting covers the rights above and that the sample reflects the whole archive. Every seller we shortlist passes our [eight-point vetting standard](https://sellmydatatoai.net/how-we-vet), including contract restrictions, the privacy notice and a re-identification test on a sample.

Ask for a [representative sample](https://sellmydatatoai.net/glossary/representative-sample) drawn at random across years and teams, and compare it with the [data manifest](https://sellmydatatoai.net/glossary/data-manifest). Our [due diligence checklist](https://sellmydatatoai.net/guides/ai-training-data-due-diligence-checklist) lists the questions to put to any seller.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I buy Slack data for AI training?

Slack data can be licensed for AI training when the company that owns the workspace holds the rights to share it and has removed personal and third-party confidential content. The license comes from that company, not from Slack. Check the seller's privacy notice, client contracts and de-identification method before you sign.

### Is workplace email data de-identified before sale?

Workplace email data should be de-identified before any buyer receives it, with names, addresses, signatures and other direct identifiers removed and indirect identifiers reviewed. The CCPA treats data as deidentified only if the business takes reasonable measures, publicly commits not to re-identify it and binds recipients by contract. Under UK GDPR, pseudonymized data is still personal data. Ask whether a re-identification test was run.

### Why do AI labs want internal company emails?

AI labs want internal company emails because they record real multi-step work with outcomes attached: requests, approvals, disputes and fixes. MIT Technology Review reported in October 2026 that Surge AI uses such archives to build reinforcement learning gyms where AI agents practice real tasks.

### Are HR records included in communications datasets?

HR records are normally left out of communications datasets. Suppliers interviewed by MIT Technology Review in October 2026 said they exclude HR records, and our seller vetting checks that personal data the seller cannot lawfully disclose is removed before any sample is shared.
