# How logistics and freight companies can sell data to AI companies

URL: https://sellmydatatoai.net/sell-your-data/logistics

Logistics and freight companies can license dispatch decisions, exception handling records, customer service threads and operating procedures to AI companies. micro1 names operations and logistics among the functions it buys data from, though no buyer publishes a logistics price range. Driver location and ELD data is personal information, and the CCPA treats precise geolocation as sensitive, so we recommend licensing the workflow records instead.

## Key takeaways

- AI buyers most want these records from logistics and freight companies: (1) dispatch, routing and load planning decisions with the reasons recorded, (2) exception records for delays, damage, shortages and refused deliveries and (3) customer service tickets and email threads with shippers and consignees.
- No AI buyer publishes a price range for logistics and freight companies yet, so value depends on volume, years of history, structure and how cleanly the rights can be shown.
- Size buyers look for: No logistics-specific minimum is published. micro1 asks for 30 or more full-time staff and primarily English documentation.
- The first rights issue to clear: Precise geolocation from vehicle tracking is sensitive personal information under the CCPA. This page covers 5 more.
- Sellers pay nothing to be assessed. We charge a success fee only when a deal completes, and the fee is agreed in writing before we introduce you to any buyer.

## At a glance

- Records buyers ask for: Dispatch, routing and load planning decisions with the reasons recorded; Exception records for delays, damage, shortages and refused deliveries; Customer service tickets and email threads with shippers and consignees; Freight quotes, RFP responses and rate negotiation notes; Warehouse and terminal procedures, safety programs and SOPs; Carrier and subcontractor onboarding and performance records
- Why buyers want them: micro1's published brief names operations and logistics as a target function and asks for workflows, SOPs, support tickets and project histories. micro1 says it uses de-identified company data to build reinforcement learning environments.
- Size buyers look for: No logistics-specific minimum is published. micro1 asks for 30 or more full-time staff and primarily English documentation.
- Rights issues: Precise geolocation from vehicle tracking is sensitive personal information under the CCPA; The CCPA has covered California employees' data, including drivers, since January 1, 2023; ELD and hours-of-service records kept for FMCSA compliance under 49 CFR 395.8; Driver-facing cameras that scan face geometry can fall under Illinois BIPA; Shipper contracts and customs documents that make rates, volumes and consignee details confidential; UK and EU: UK GDPR names location data as an identifier, and tachograph data exists for enforcement

A logistics business makes a recorded decision every time a load is planned, rerouted or held. micro1, which said in October 2026 it would spend $1 billion over 12 months on enterprise operational data, lists operations and logistics as one of the functions it wants data from.

## What logistics data do AI companies buy?

AI companies buy logistics data that shows how work gets done: who decided what, with what information, and what happened next. micro1's published brief asks for SOPs, process documentation, workflows, templates, support tickets, project histories and internal communications.

Exception handling and customer service threads fit that brief closely. A delayed or damaged shipment produces a chain of messages, a decision and an outcome, which is the structure an [agent trajectory](https://sellmydatatoai.net/glossary/agent-trajectory) records. Terminal procedures and safety programs add the rules the decisions were made under.

## Which logistics records should you hold back?

Logistics sellers should hold back driver-level location and hours data unless it can be fully [de-identified](https://sellmydatatoai.net/glossary/de-identification). The CCPA, at California Civil Code section 1798.140(ae), lists a consumer's precise geolocation as sensitive personal information, so a tracked truck linked to a driver schedule is sensitive data about the driver.

| Record | Typical risk | Our usual recommendation |
| --- | --- | --- |
| SOPs, terminal procedures, safety programs | Low if written in-house | License |
| Customer service tickets and exception threads | Names, addresses and client terms | De-identify, then license |
| Quotes, RFP responses and rate notes | Shipper and carrier confidentiality | Check contracts, remove rates if needed |
| Telematics and GPS traces | Driver precise geolocation | Exclude or aggregate |
| ELD and hours-of-service records | Driver hours kept for FMCSA compliance | Exclude |
| Dashcam and yard camera footage | Drivers, the public, license plates | Exclude unless fully cleared |

## What rights issues do logistics companies need to clear?

### Driver location and ELD data

Driver data is employee data, and state privacy law now reaches it. The California Attorney General said in July 2023 that, since January 1, 2023, covered businesses must comply with the CCPA for employee data, which includes the precise geolocation the Act treats as sensitive.

ELD records exist for safety compliance. Under [49 CFR 395.8(k)(1)](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/49/395.8), a motor carrier must retain records of duty status and supporting documents for at least six months. Those records tie a named driver to times and places, and licensing them to an AI company is a purpose they were never collected for, so we recommend leaving them out.

### Shipper and subcontractor contracts

Shipper contracts may treat rates, volumes and consignee details as confidential. Daniel Goldberg of Frankfurt Kurnit Klein and Selz points out that email and chat contain other companies' confidential information, often covered by NDAs and commercial agreements, and holding a record does not give you the right to sell it.

Customs entries and commercial invoices reveal who your clients buy from, what they pay and where goods move. Treat them as client confidential unless your terms say otherwise.

### Camera footage

Dashcam and yard camera footage records drivers, members of the public and license plates. Illinois BIPA lists a scan of face geometry as a biometric identifier, though not a photograph, so driver-facing systems that analyze faces need particular care, and clearing footage frame by frame is slow.

> **Start with the paperwork, not the trucks** Procedures, exception threads and customer service records carry the operational knowledge. Vehicle, driver and footage data carry most of the privacy risk. Separate the two before you build a [data manifest](https://sellmydatatoai.net/guides/how-to-build-a-data-manifest).

## How much is logistics data worth to AI buyers?

Logistics data has no published industry range. micro1's general tiers start at $100,000 to $500,000 for a qualified partnership and rise to $3 million or more for highly unique operational data. It prioritizes the US, then other Western markets, and says demand is strongest in the US, UK and Canada.

micro1 also says several years of records across multiple systems is generally a stronger fit. A forwarder with a long run of ticket history in one platform and procedures in another matches that description better than a new operator with a single system.

## If you hold UK or EU data

UK operations follow the GDPR. [UK GDPR Article 4(1)](https://www.legislation.gov.uk/eur/2016/679/article/4) names location data as an identifier, and tachograph records exist for drivers' hours enforcement, with GOV.UK guidance requiring operators to produce them to enforcement officers for 12 months. Article 8A tests reuse for a new purpose, so we recommend excluding UK telematics and tachograph data too.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can we sell our telematics data to AI companies?

You can only license telematics data safely once it no longer identifies drivers. The CCPA treats a consumer's precise geolocation as sensitive personal information, and it has applied to California employees' data since January 1, 2023. Aggregated or fully de-identified route data is a different question, but take independent legal advice first.

### Do our shipper contracts stop us licensing data?

Shipper contracts may stop you licensing data that reveals rates, volumes or consignee details, so read them before preparing anything. Your own procedures and de-identified exception records are less likely to be caught. Our [licensing agreement checklist](https://sellmydatatoai.net/guides/ai-data-licensing-agreement-checklist) covers the clauses buyers will ask about.

### Does micro1 buy data from logistics firms?

micro1 names operations and logistics as a target function and says demand is strongest in the US, UK and Canada, with the US prioritized. It asks for 30 or more full-time staff and primarily English documentation. Our profile of [micro1](https://sellmydatatoai.net/data-buyers/micro1) sets out its published terms.

### How long do we have to keep ELD records?

Under 49 CFR 395.8(k)(1), a motor carrier must keep drivers' records of duty status and supporting documents for at least six months. That duty exists for safety compliance, not licensing, and it is one reason we recommend excluding ELD and hours-of-service records from any AI data package.
