How to sell CAD and design files for AI training

By Gareth HoyleLast updated 5 minute readHow we research

In short

You can license CAD models, drawings and design files to AI companies where you own the copyright and no export control or customer NDA applies. Handshake AI, Polyshares and SimpleClosure AssetHub name design files, and Mercor's published listings run from $20,000 to $1.5 million per company across design, construction and manufacturing. Native files with revision history and linked specifications are worth most.

Key takeaways

  • Handshake AI, Polyshares, SimpleClosure AssetHub and micro1 name design documentation, design files or engineering documentation among what they buy.
  • Mercor's listings, reported by ddiy.co, run from $20,000 to $890,000 for design agencies and $100,000 to $1.5 million for manufacturers, but no buyer prices individual files.
  • Native parametric files with revision history and linked specifications are worth more than exported meshes.
  • Customer drawings made under NDA and work by outside consultants usually belong to someone else.
  • Files describing controlled technology can trigger US export rules, including deemed exports to foreign persons inside the US.

Design files hold engineering intent that no public source contains: geometry, constraints, tolerances, assemblies and the revisions that fixed real problems. Demand is reaching specialist design data too. Dealroom reported in October 2026 that the broker Grepped was advertising a vice president of semiconductors role at $4 million to $9 million a year, which points to buyer interest in chip design data.

Who buys CAD and design files for AI training?

CAD and design files are bought by training-data companies, direct buyers and brokers, usually with the specifications and test records that explain them.

How much are CAD and design files worth?

CAD and design files have no published price per file or per model. Mercor's industry listings, reported by ddiy.co in October 2026, cover whole company archives that include design records.

Mercor's listings for design-heavy sectors, as reported by ddiy.co
SectorPublished range per companySize covered
Design and web agencies$20,000 to $890,00010 to 200 employees
Construction companies$115,000 to $1 million50 to 2,000 employees
Manufacturers$100,000 to $1.5 million20 to 2,000 employees

No buyer publishes a range for engineering or architecture design firms. Our pages for engineering and architecture firms and manufacturers cover the sector-specific checks.

What makes design files more valuable?

Design files are more valuable when they keep the design history and the records that show why each change was made.

What raises and lowers the value of design files
FactorWorth moreWorth less
File typeNative parametric models with feature historyExported meshes or STL files
RevisionsEvery revision with engineering change noticesLatest version only
ContextLinked specifications, tolerances, test and inspection resultsGeometry with no requirements
DrawingsDimensioned drawings with bills of materialsRenders and screenshots
VarietyMany parts, products and design problemsHundreds of near-identical variants

Interface design files follow the same rule. Layered files with each version and the client feedback that drove it teach more than the final screens, which are often public already.

Your company owns the copyright in design files its employees created as part of their jobs, which the US Copyright Office's Circular 30 treats as works made for hire. Files created by outside engineers, architects or designers belong to them unless they assigned the rights in writing, because commissioned work qualifies as made for hire only in nine narrow categories with a signed agreement.

Stock content is a common trap. Getty Images' content license agreement lists machine learning and AI use as restricted unless an additional license is bought, so strip licensed images and fonts before export. We are a broker, not a law firm, so take independent advice on any contract you are unsure of.

Do export controls apply to design files?

Export controls apply to design files whenever they contain controlled technology, and drawings and models of a controlled item can themselves be controlled technology. The Bureau of Industry and Security treats releasing controlled technology to a foreign person inside the United States as a deemed export under section 734.13(b) of the Export Administration Regulations.

That matters for a data license, because a buyer's staff or contractors may be foreign persons or overseas. Check the classification of your products before any design file leaves your systems. Files for defense or other government contracts carry their own handling rules, so leave them out unless the contracting authority agrees in writing.

What should you strip from design files?

You should strip the details that identify customers, sites and people, much of which sits in title blocks and file properties rather than the geometry.

  • Title blocks with client names, project addresses and drawing numbers
  • Engineer stamps, signatures and license numbers
  • File properties such as author, company and network file paths
  • Site coordinates and survey data in civil and building models
  • Customer part numbers and references to customer specifications
  • Embedded fonts, logos and stock images

How should you package design files?

You should package design files as native files plus neutral exports, so a buyer can use them whatever software it runs.

  • Native files with assembly structure and feature history intact
  • Neutral formats such as STEP, IGES, DXF or IFC alongside the natives
  • Drawings as PDF and native drawing files, linked to their models
  • Specifications, change notices and test results with stable IDs
  • A manifest listing software and version, part and assembly counts, revision counts and exclusions

Our guide to building a data manifest shows how to record file hashes and exclusions so the delivery matches the sample.

If you hold UK or EU data

RIBA Journal explains that under a RIBA appointment the architect keeps copyright in drawings and licenses it to the client. The UK Export Control Joint Unit says emailing controlled technology abroad, or uploading it to the cloud where it is accessed overseas, needs an export license, and that responsibility lies with the owner of the technology.

How do you start selling design files?

You start by sorting projects into your own designs, customer designs and consultant designs, and flagging any product close to a control list entry. That split usually decides how much of an archive is licensable.

Every buyer is verified for identity, intended use and onward transfer limits before seeing a sample. Get a free data valuation to see likely buyers and a realistic range for your design archive.

Frequently asked questions

Can a manufacturer sell CAD files of parts made for customers?
A manufacturer usually cannot license CAD files of parts made to a customer's design, because the drawings and specifications are the customer's property, normally supplied under an NDA or purchase terms. Your own records about making those parts, such as inspection results and change notices, may be usable once customer details are removed. Check each customer contract.
Are STL or mesh files worth selling?
STL and mesh files are worth less than native CAD, because they keep only surface geometry and lose the features, constraints and history that show how a part was designed. They can still help 3D vision and generation models, especially with labels. Where you have both, deliver the native file and say which format each record is in.
Do export controls matter for commercial designs?
Export controls can matter for commercial designs, because dual-use control lists cover many civilian products, not only military items. The Bureau of Industry and Security also treats release of controlled technology to a foreign person in the United States as a deemed export. Check product classifications before any design file reaches a buyer.
Can a design agency sell its Figma files?
A design agency can license Figma files it still owns, such as unused concepts and internal work, where client contracts did not assign them. Final deliverables are often assigned to clients on payment. Stock images and fonts inside the files need removing, and freelancers' work needs a written assignment. SimpleClosure AssetHub lists Figma among the workspace data it sells.
