Sell My Data To AI

How retail and ecommerce businesses can sell data to AI companies

Last updated How we research

In short

Retailers and ecommerce businesses can license customer support conversations, product copy they wrote, returns reasons and merchandising decisions to AI companies. Customer purchase histories are personal information, and in California handing them over for value is a sale under the CCPA unless de-identified to its standard. Supplier images and descriptions usually belong to the brand, not to you.

Key takeaways

  • AI buyers most want these records from retail and ecommerce businesses: (1) customer support tickets, chats and email threads, de-identified, (2) product descriptions, buying guides and size guides written in-house and (3) returns reasons and resolution notes.
  • No AI buyer publishes a price range for retail and ecommerce businesses yet, so value depends on volume, years of history, structure and how cleanly the rights can be shown.
  • Size buyers look for: No retail minimum is published. micro1 asks for 30 or more full-time staff, and Handshake AI for 20 or more staff and three years in business.
  • The first rights issue to clear: Under the CCPA, transferring personal information for value is a sale unless de-identified to its standard. This page covers 5 more.
  • Sellers pay nothing to be assessed. We charge a success fee only when a deal completes, and the fee is agreed in writing before we introduce you to any buyer.

Retail and ecommerce businesses: what buyers look for

Records buyers ask for
  • Customer support tickets, chats and email threads, de-identified
  • Product descriptions, buying guides and size guides written in-house
  • Returns reasons and resolution notes
  • Product question and answer threads
  • Merchandising, buying and assortment planning notes
  • Site search queries and zero-result logs, de-identified
Why buyers want them
micro1's published brief names customer support and sales and CRM among the functions it wants data from. A support thread records a request, the steps taken and the outcome, which is the structure of an agent trajectory.
Size buyers look for
No retail minimum is published. micro1 asks for 30 or more full-time staff, and Handshake AI for 20 or more staff and three years in business.
Rights issues to clear
  • Under the CCPA, transferring personal information for value is a sale unless de-identified to its standard
  • State privacy laws such as Virginia's give consumers a right to opt out of the sale of personal data
  • FTC Act Section 5: quietly widening privacy promises to allow AI training may be unfair or deceptive
  • Supplier images and descriptions belong to whoever created them, often the brand
  • Customer reviews belong to their authors unless your terms grant a wide enough license
  • UK and EU: UK GDPR Article 8A tests reuse of UK customer data for a new purpose

Retailers hold two very different assets. Transaction records are mostly personal information about customers. Support conversations, product copy and buying decisions record how the business works, and they are much closer to what AI buyers publish briefs for.

What retail and ecommerce data do AI companies buy?

AI companies buy retail and ecommerce data that captures work being done. micro1's published brief names customer support and sales and CRM as target functions and asks for support tickets, CRM records, templates and knowledge bases.

A support ticket that runs from a complaint through order lookup and refund rules to a resolution is close to an agent trajectory. Product copy and buying guides your team wrote are expert domain data for the categories you sell.

Can you sell customer purchase data for AI training?

Customer purchase data can only be licensed within the limits of the privacy notice in force when you collected it. Daniel Goldberg of Frankfurt Kurnit Klein and Selz notes that companies must honor the privacy statements that applied at collection, and the FTC warned in February 2024 that quietly adopting more permissive data practices, such as AI training, may be unfair or deceptive.

In California, the CCPA treats handing over personal information for monetary or other valuable consideration as a sale, unless the data meets the Act's de-identification standard: technical measures, a public commitment not to re-identify and contractual limits on recipients. Other state laws add opt-out rights, such as Virginia's at Code section 59.1-577(A)(5), which covers the sale of personal data.

Children's data carries a further rule. The FTC's amended COPPA Rule, finalized in January 2025, requires covered website and online service operators to obtain separate verifiable parental consent before disclosing children's personal information to third parties.

Who owns product images, descriptions and reviews?

Product images and descriptions belong to whoever created them. Under 17 U.S.C. section 201, copyright vests initially in the author, and an employer owns work its staff prepare within the scope of their employment as a work made for hire. Text and photos supplied by brands are theirs, provided to you for selling their products.

Customer reviews follow the same rule. The reviewer owns the copyright unless your terms of use transfer it in a signed writing, as 17 U.S.C. section 204(a) requires for a transfer, or grant you a license wide enough to cover AI training. Check the terms that applied when each review was posted, and remove supplier content before you build a data manifest.

How much is retail data worth to AI buyers?

No buyer publishes a retail or ecommerce range. micro1's general tiers start at $100,000 to $500,000 for a qualified partnership. Handshake AI says it has paid $100,000 to $4 million to date and looks for 20 or more staff and three or more years in business, according to ddiy.co's review of its site in October 2026.

The volume of support history and the share of content you wrote yourself drive the range. Our guide to what your data is worth explains the factors, and exclusive and non-exclusive licenses price very differently.

If you hold UK or EU data

UK customer data is tested under Article 8A of UK GDPR, which asks whether the new purpose is compatible with the original one, weighing the customer relationship and the possible consequences for customers. In the UK, section 11 of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 also makes the author the first owner of product copy and photos.

How do you sell retail data through Sell My Data To AI?

We start with a consultation and never take custody of your raw data. Buyers see redacted samples under a mutual NDA, and full data moves only after you sign a license directly with the buyer.

You approve every buyer, every sample and every license term, and you can withdraw at any point before signing. Book a consultation to find out which of your records are in demand.

Frequently asked questions

Can an online store sell customer data to AI companies?
An online store can license de-identified support records and content it wrote, but selling identifiable customer data is limited by the privacy notice it gave customers and by state laws such as the CCPA, which treats a transfer for value as a sale. We recommend excluding raw customer data and licensing the records that show how the business works.
Can we license product descriptions supplied by brands?
You cannot license product descriptions supplied by brands unless the brand agrees. Copyright stays with the author, and brand content is provided for selling the brand's products. Descriptions, buying guides and size guides written by your own employees are works made for hire that belong to your company under 17 U.S.C. section 201(b).
Are customer reviews ours to sell?
Customer reviews belong to the people who wrote them unless your terms of use transfer copyright or grant you a license. Check whether that license covers sublicensing and AI training, and which version of your terms applied when each review was posted. Reviews also carry names and personal details that need removing.
What does the CCPA mean for selling retail data?
Under the CCPA, giving personal information to another business for value counts as a sale unless the data meets the Act's de-identification standard. That standard requires technical measures, a public commitment not to re-identify and contractual limits on recipients. Our UK GDPR, EU GDPR and CCPA guide explains the steps.
