How does Cohere source training data?

Cohere does not describe a data buying or licensing program on its public pages. Its best-documented data project is the Aya dataset, published on Hugging Face by Cohere Labs. The dataset card lists 204,114 prompt and completion pairs in 65 languages, written and edited by volunteers on the Aya Annotation Platform between June and December 2023, and released under Apache 2.0.

What is the publishers' lawsuit against Cohere?

Condé Nast, The Atlantic, Forbes, The Guardian, Insider, the Los Angeles Times, Politico, the Toronto Star and Vox Media sued Cohere in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York in February 2025, SiliconANGLE reported. They allege Cohere used more than 4,000 copyrighted works to train its models. Cohere called the suit misguided and frivolous.

Bloomberg Government reported on November 14, 2025 that Judge Colleen McMahon had denied Cohere's motion to dismiss the direct infringement claim as it relates to AI outputs. Our AI data deals tracker lists no licensing deal with Cohere as licensee.
