Direct buyer
Microsoft
Microsoft licenses content for AI through direct deals and its Publisher Content Marketplace, which it introduced on February 3, 2026. In the marketplace, publishers set their own licensing and usage terms and are paid on delivered value when AI products use their content to ground answers. Microsoft has also been reported as the buyer in book and academic content deals worth $5,000 per title and about $10 million.

What is the Microsoft Publisher Content Marketplace?
The Microsoft Publisher Content Marketplace is a system where publishers set licensing and usage terms and AI builders license content for specific grounding scenarios. Tim Frank, Corporate Vice President of Microsoft AI Monetization, wrote on February 3, 2026 that publishers will be paid on delivered value and get usage-based reporting. The first scenarios ran in Microsoft Copilot, and Yahoo was named among the demand partners being onboarded.
The post says The Associated Press, Business Insider, Condé Nast, Hearst Magazines, People Inc, USA TODAY Co. and Vox Media helped design the marketplace, and that participation is voluntary. It covers grounding answers, not model training.
